A workshop was recently held in Changunarayan Municipality to develop an action plan for Disaster Risk Reduction and Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) based on the Strategic Plan 2081. The event, organized with support from ISET Nepal and DCA Nepal, brought together female executives and ward members, representatives from the Senior Citizens’ Forum, persons with disabilities and their families, and officials from different municipal departments. During the program, Mayor Jeevan Khatri shared that Changunarayan is relatively more vulnerable to disasters, which is why the municipality has established a special sub-unit dedicated to disaster risk reduction and management. He emphasized the need for inclusive participation in ward-level disaster management committees, ensuring that senior citizens, women, youth, marginalized communities, and persons with disabilities have an active role. He also noted that the municipality has been implementing several programs focusing on women, senior citizens, children, and people with disabilities. According to Mayor Khatri, the new action plan will help the municipality make future policies and plans more inclusive and responsive to the needs of vulnerable groups. It will also strengthen efforts to protect families and communities from potential disasters. The plan aims to enhance access, capacity, and participation of all groups by integrating GEDSI principles into disaster management. It focuses on understanding climate and disaster risks through an inclusive lens, promoting inclusive governance, encouraging investment in disaster risk reduction, improving preparedness and infrastructure design, supporting research and capacity building, ensuring inclusive early warning systems, and integrating GEDSI into social protection and disaster financing.
