Cultural and spiritual practices have consistently reflected people’s valuing of nature and their desire to foster harmony with the environment throughout human history. Environmental governance encompasses ethical behaviors linked with spiritual practices and activities and thus contributes to environmental sustainability. Spiritual practices and environmental governance are causally linked in certain cultures more than others in shaping policies and actions that advance the well-being of the planet’s natural ecosystems and inhabitants. The trajectory of anthropogenic actions on commercial extraction of natural resources over the past two centuries, while yielding material benefits, has also brought about a severe decline in Earth’s biodiversity and exacerbated the climate change crisis. Addressing these threats necessitates adopting approaches that aim for synergy between spiritual practices and effective environmental governance.
