Urban and peri-urban agriculture provides a complimentary strategy to reduce the urban poverty and food security and enhance environmental management. Next to food security urban agriculture contributes to the local economic development, poverty alleviation and social inclusion of the urban poor and women in particular, as well provides greenery to a city and the productive reuse of urban wastes. Urban and peri-urban agriculture is the fundamental need for the urban poor.
Kathmandu valley has been selected as a case study site for the analysis of relationship between urban agriculture and climate change. The existing systemic linkage between the peri urban areas of Kathmandu valley is explored to study the urban agricultural practices in urban Kathmandu and analyse the likely impact of climate change in the agriculture production. The study includes major VDCs adjoining Kathmandu as they are the bridge to access agriculture and other farm products from rural and peri urban to urban Kathmandu. Agriculture commodity market centers surrounding city were purposively selected to analyse service flows of agriculture goods. In addition ward level survey will also be done in some VDCs to better understand the food basket.
