Risk nexus: learning from 2014 Karnali flood

The report focused on flooding in the Tarai plains of the Babai and Karnali rivers. Intense monsoon rainfall and unstable steep, rugged slopes in the mountain mean high rates of soil erosion and landside; rivers carry a high sediment load. When these rivers enter the broad, flat plains of the Tarai they slow, spread out and deposit sand and gravel. The catastrophic flood events in Nepal are 1993 central Nepal flood, 2008 koshi embankment breach, 2008 floods in western Nepal and the 2013 Mahakali disaster. Research on the Karnali flood indicates that Nepal’s disaster management system, on the whole is weak.
