ISET-Nepal was established in 2001 as a non-governmental and not-for-profit organization to study and analyse developmental issues of rapidly changing social and environmental context that demand new insights into the emerging challenges to manage resources for sustainable development.
This study argues that for effective climate change adaptation ILKP and scientific knowledge communities must work together to generate new knowledge and improved practices that are situation specific. Developing new synthesized knowledge requires the integration of both knowledge systems. It also requires greater participation of local communities who are particularly vulnerable to the risks associated with climate change. While scientific research on climate change projections and impacts are critical to developing appropriate adaptation solutions,
the traditional forms of knowledge and wisdom they offer help reinforce adaptive capacity as a strategy for building resilience.
This report examines the vulnerability of Kathmandu Valley’s food system to rapid urbanization, degradation of the Valley’s land and water resources, and climate change, with a particular emphasis on the changing nature of peri-urban agriculture practiced in the Valley. It examines both the role that systems such as transportation, energy, food etc. and the linkages among various systemic components.
ISET-International, ISET-Nepal and Practical Action collaborated to develop and refine an approach to post-event analysis which can be applied more broadly and will support a systematic understanding of how to build resilience and develop mechanisms to avoid loses in the future, particularly at the scale of communities, urban areas, or rural regions. This framework would be helpful to generate approaches to post-event analysis that enable implementation of practical risk reduction activities and systematic data collection on what works. The project is supported by Zurich Insurance Company Ltd, Switzerland.
